Adventure Book

Our next type of book to be read is an adventure book. The students must finish reading their book by December 15th. I’ve put together lists of grade appropriate books for this genre. Please ask if you have any questions.

4th-5th Book Reports

Book Reports 11-12 to the 4th-5th Book Reports for this year. This has been delayed because of the time it has taken to set up Accelerated Reader. Please ignore the first two due dates. The next book is to be read by Thursday, November 17. This is to be a historical fiction book. It would be wise for students to pick their book by this Wednesday, so they can get some reading done over the long weekend.

5th-6th History Test

The 5-6 graders will be taking their chapter 5 history test next week Wednesday. A Chapter 5 Study Guide and worksheet packets were handed out in class on Thursday. The first two pages of the worksheet packet are a review of our previous three chapters. Students were asked to use their book fill it out and study it. The same work sheet will be on the test. The study guide is shares other information that will be on the test.

Progress Reports

Progress reports were emailed out today. In the chronicle last week, I said I was going to email out usernames and passwords for your to log in and view your child’s progress reports. This is the way I have done progress reports the last few years. As I was working on setting up the progress reports this past weekend, I found this new, faster and easier way to send and view progress reports. The reports will be emailed to you each week. You don’t have to go to a website and remember a password to view the report. If you have any questions about the report, please don’t be afraid to ask. I can also add up to two email addresses per student. If you’d like a second email address added, please let me know.

Assignments 8/29 – 9/2

Happy Monday! I pray everyone had a blessed weekend.

Here is a link to this week’s assignments. They may change slightly over the course of the week, due to review of a lesson or an unforeseen time restraint, but they are pretty accurate.

Correct Papers

Please check your child’s expandable folder on Fridays for their corrected papers from the week. After I correct papers and enter them into my grade book they are placed in a folder. One of the classroom jobs is to take the papers from that folder and sort them into the student mail boxes. On Fridays, students bring those papers home. If you have any questions about the papers, please don’t be afraid to ask.

Typing Help

Mr. Hintz has a SMART Board in his classroom. If you don’t know what that is, imagine a white board that you can write on digitally and import images that can be manipulated on the screen with your finger. That’s a very entry level description of what a SMART Board can do.

That SMART Board is a wonderful tool to have in the classroom that makes lessons visual and engages students. One subject that Mr. Hintz uses the SMART Board in regularly is English. He types up sentences from the book into a program. Then he or the students can cross off words, underlines and circle words, depending on what lesson is being taught that day.

Typing 10-20 sentences for two English classes, four days a week does take a little time. If you would be willing to help type sentences, please speak with Mr. Hintz. He can loan you a book to take home. Sentences can be typed at home in your free time and emailed to Mr. Hintz when you are finished. Thanks!

Spelling City

Spelling City is a great website to study spelling words. I have the units all typed up on my teacher account. You can go to my list by typing or clicking www.spellingcity.com/mrhintz. The website will teach the words to the students and play several different games to help memorize them. It’s a lot of fun and students will learn their words too. If you would like to help type word lists that aren’t already published on the site, please speak with Mr. Hintz.

Extra Credit Binders

Each 4th and 5th grader has an extra credit binder. Twenty-six extra credit worksheets will be added to these binders each quarter. The worksheets will be awarded 2-5 extra credit points based on the difficulty of the worksheet and how well the student did on it. The extra credit points can be applied to any subject that has a grade that is lower than an A.
